Yes, drinking water, and lot’s of it will in fact give you a better, long—lasting tan. You should be drinking half your body weight in ounces of water every single day. Hydrate your skin from the inside out. Also, add moisturizer into your routine, if it’s not already there. Moisturize your skin 2x a day. Start this process at least 1 week prior to your appointment.
Shower before your tan at least 4 hours prior. Shave any unwanted body hair as you will not be able to shave after for a while. Shower with a gel-based body wash. It is best to purchase a body wash that is specially designed for sunless tanning. You want a moisturizing wash that is formulated to keep from striping the skin of its natural components while extending the developed color from DHA.
Okay, so this step is VERY important. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP. Many women think they can get away with not exfoliating before their spray tan. I myself, skipped this step many times until I learned the why behind it. Let me break it down for you. Every 28 days your skin is completely “recycled” and new skin takes its place. So every week, 25% of your skin dies off and it either sits on top of your skin or is exfoliated. If you don’t exfoliate pre-tan, there is a very high chance that the sunless application will be applied to dead skin cells that will fall off within a day or two, leaving you with that oh so scary “Alligator Skin” look.
Properly exfoliating will leave you with fresh, new skin that is ready for the DHA absorption.
Exfoliation should be done 24 hours prior to spray tan session.
4. AVOID THESE PRODUCTS PRE-TAN
Do not wear any deodorant, perfume, moisturizer, oils or makeup as these products will act as a barrier between your tan and your skin. Wear loose, dark clothing to your spray tan and bring the garments or swim suit that you would like to tan in. Again, preferably dark colors.
